Periodontics
Next to keeping your teeth clean and healthy, the most important action you can take to preserve your smile is caring for the health of your gums. Many people don’t realize that gum disease, if not treated, can cost them all their teeth. We want you to preserve your smile. It is possible to keep your teeth for your whole life. We can help.
What Is Periodontics?
Periodontics is the part of dentistry that treats diseases of the gums. Early gum disease is called “gingivitis” and can usually be treated by improving at-home care and maintaining regular professional cleanings.
Advanced gum disease is called “periodontitis.” At this stage, the disease can destroy the supporting structures of your teeth, including the bone. Teeth loosen and may be lost.
Even at the advanced stage, gum disease may be reversed. We can offer our patients “scaling and root planing,” which consists of a deep cleaning under the gums.
Signs of Gum Disease
Early Signs | Advanced Signs |
---|---|
Bleeding after brushing or flossing | Deep pockets around the teeth |
Red, swollen, sore spots in the gums | Shifting teeth |
Bad breath | Change in the way teeth meet |
Gums beginning to recede from teeth | Pus discharge from the gums |
Pain when chewing |
If you see early signs, please seek care to reverse gum disease. If you see advanced signs, there’s not a moment to lose. Immediate and thorough care may still save your teeth. We are ready to help.
